Brayden - 5 years old

Brayden is all about "I am bigger than Lilly" and "I can stay up earlier than Lilly because I am older now".  That is the reasoning we now get with a 5 year old in the house.  I doesn't necessarily get him anywhere but that is how is brain is thinking.

In the 1 short month that we have had Legos in the house, Brayden has become a master Lego builder.  The only problem he has is when he is taking them back apart and can't pull two of the skinny pieces apart (which is quite hard to do if you recall).  Rarely does he come to us for help in putting a set together...he is quite detail oriented and likes to follow the instructions exactly (just like me!)

He continues to love learning and is really trying to learn to read...I think I need to work with him some more on site words and phonics, but if he is in the mood, he can sound out most words.  He can also do some basic math, occasionally in his head without using fingers to count.

At his 5 yr check up last week, we had to fill out the "Ages and Stages" questionnaire form.  A good bit of the form, required Brayden's input vs me just marking yes/no as to whether he could do a task.  There was only 1 thing that I couldn't mark yes by and it was "Can your child repeat both of these sentences back without making any mistakes?"  There were 2 8ish word sentences (both were sort of tongue twisters at that) that I had to read him and then have him repeat them back to me.  He did one with out problem, but the other he left out a word or two.  Not a big deal in my book!

1st warm day of spring... happy to be outside with no coat!
1st time bowling - he loved it!

Child labor at its best! He asked to help...why not let him try!
Building at Wesley's birthday party
His handwriting is amazing and he makes most of the letters correctly (facing the right way, etc) and uses upper and lower case letters appropriately 70ish% of the time.  I have been making him write Thank You notes for his birthday presents (we do a few a night) and he has been doing a great job. Brayden continues to love drawing as well.  Several moms from daycare have commented on his detailed drawings and good handwriting skills.  I guess this just comes naturally, because neither Matt nor I have great drawing or handwriting abilities.
"at" words - He does this all on his own, every. single. day!

As for growth, he has actually jumped up a bit on the growth curve!  For the 1st time ever (I think) Brayden is above 10% for height or weight!  The official stats were:

             height: 42" (29%)
             weight: 37.8lbs (27%)

I have no idea when he got so big and heavy!!   Some nights, he barely eats any dinner and then runs around like crazy all day long.  I guess he really is growing while he is sleeping though!  Speaking of sleeping, Brayden has been taking naps at school again the past month or month and a half.  He was down to 2-3 per week, but recently, he has been napping every day, although sometimes for only 30-40 minutes.

Brayden continues to love all things sports...baseball and soccer are the only 2 that we have actually tried, but he loves both.  We took a break this winter, but Brayden does still get to do soccer weekly at school which is nice.  We will pick back up with soccer in the spring....he was asked to "move up" a level in the YMCA soccer program.  The coaches from the spring and fall (both daycare dads) picked some of the "more advanced" kids and asked if they would like to move up a level in the spring.  The next level up is for kids that are already in kindergarten, but they got special permission from the YMCA to bring this 1 team up.  I think Brayden will enjoy the challenge and will hopefully have FUN and learn a few more things along the way!

Daycare Life

We have been blessed to have some wonderful people take care of our kids each day over the past few years and they are both thriving because of it!

Even though Lilly is not smiling in any of the pictures, I promise that she loves these ladies and they love her (and Brayden)!

Ms LaTonya (1 year old teacher who Lilly was ATTACHED to)
Ms Chante (gym teacher/floater...she rocks!)
Ms Brenda (1 year old teacher...love her Puerto Rican spirit!)
Lilly recently moved up to the 2 year old class (this was a hard one for me because so much transition happens in this class...potty training, dressing themselves, colors, numbers, etc, etc).  Basically, it means that I don't have a baby anymore but instead I have a little girl.

I was actually concerned about how she would transition to the new class, but she went for her 2hr visit and never looked back!  There was no transition week for Lilly.  And apparently, she is now "in charge" in the classroom.  Small and mighty, I tell you!  She knows what she wants and knows what to do to get it!  She is also fiercely independent!

Within 2 weeks of moving to the new class, Lilly decided that she was ready for potty training so off to Target we went to buy Minnie Mouse and Princess panties.  She is doing OK with it, but still has at least 1 accident daily (mainly #2 or because she can't get her pants down far enough not to pee on them when she sits on the potty).
I can't figure out to turn this thing (but this is Lilly's score card for the 1st day of potty training :)

Brayden has also been doing very well in his new class.  He moved up in early August to the Pre-K 2 class (rising kindergartners)!  They have "homework" 1-2 nights a week which I am fine with as long as it isn't mandatory just yet :)  Most nights we do the homework and he enjoys doing it because he loves to write, draw, cut, etc and that is what the homework is.  His 1st assignment a few weeks ago, was to write 5 words that start with each letter :D, E, and F.  Brayden came up with the list on the ride home and immediatly went to work writing the words out.  Of course, I had to help him spell them, but he did a great job!

Tonight's assignment was to practice writing big "G", little "g", big "H", and little "H".  Brayden jumped right on that too, and went a step more and wanted to write a bunch of G and H words out!

I love his enthusiasm for doing his "homework" right now!  I just hope it continues next year when we start school!

Lilly - 2 years old

It seems like yesterday that we were bringing Lilly home for the hospital.  I can't believe that it has been 2 years already!

Lilly has really seemed to change a lot in the past few months.  It is apparent that she is no longer a "baby" (although she will ALWAYS be my baby girl!) but she is really starting to become a little girl.  It is hard to believe that she has gone for the tiny 5lb 15oz baby to a silly, sassy, loud, cuddly, sweet, loving little girl!

September 2, 2013
She loves to dress up, wear anyone and everyone's shoes, and is VERY opinionated about what she is going to wear everyday.  I have given up on the fight long ago and have decided that as long as the clothgin she chooses is appropriate (covers appropriate body parts and is weather appropriate), she can wear whatever.  For her birthday, we got her Cinderella dress up shoes and Matt's parents got her Minnie Mouse jewelery (necklace, ring, bracelet, and earrings).  She LOVES all of it so much!
A little blurry but still cute - princess crown, broom, and Minnie Mouse jewelery
She also loves to push her baby around in the stroller and is starting to play more with her baby dolls (feeding, loving on them, etc).  As a kid, I spent countless hours playing baby and have wonderful memories of this so I hope Lilly enjoys playing baby as much as I did.  Other favorite birthday gifts were a bed (pack-n-play style) for her baby dolls, play food, and a cooking set

New tea set from Ms Elaine!
Putting her baby to sleep - the pats are a little on the hard side though
As much as she is a Diva, she can stand her ground with Brayden.  She does not take anything from him which is great!  Actually, they love each other very much and are still very close.  I love seeing them play together.  It melts my heart each time!  I pray that their relationship continues on the same path as it is right now.
Riding the tractor at Lowe's - a favorite for both kids!
If we go outside, Lilly likes to walk around carrying a baseball bat, baseball, and has to have gloves on because, well, you can't play baseball without gloves, right?  Even though they are really bright blue kids gardening gloves!  Sometimes a small fight ensues over who gets to wear the gloves, but typically Brayden concedes and let Lilly have them.  Lilly also loves to go for walks - stroller, pushable tricycle, or her Cozy Coupe car are all favorite modes of transportation.

Lilly also really enjoys the park, especially the big slide and the swing.  She loves to climb on the big kid equipment which makes this momma's heart skip a beat but overall, she manages just fine.

Last week, Lilly had to stay home from school because she was "sick".  Thankfully, my dad was able to come for 2 days and keep her so that Matt and I could work.  Because she acted and felt just fine, they went and did a lot of fun outdoors stuff.  On Sunday during lunch, Lilly talked for a full 5 minutes about everything she and Paw did.  I didn't understand it all, but she was very excited and animated about it all!  So cute!  I know they went for several walks, walked around in the back yard, went to the park, read lots of books, and who knows what else.

Developmentally, Lilly is probably right on track.  I feel like her speech is a little behind but maybe that is because Brayden was so advanced.  Just in the past 2-3 weeks, she speech has become clearer and she saying more and more and has started saying 2-3 word phrases.  I had the kids in Target on Sunday and we were looking at all of the Disney princess stuff.  Brayden wanted to see if she could say any of their names, so I started pointing to each princess and she would try to repeat them.  For the most part, what she said sounded the same regardless of the name, but she was definitely trying where a month ago, she probably wouldn't have even tried.  She is also trying to count, say a few of the ABCs, and just tonight while they were watching Umizoomi, she answered "yellow" correctly when they asked a question on the show.  I was amazed!  According to the Dr today, Lilly should be saying between 50-100 words now with about 50% of what she says understandable to us.  I would say that she is right on track based on that information and perhaps a tiny bit ahead.  While the Dr and I were talking about things that Lilly did/didn't do, Lilly was playing with some books.  All of a sudden she looked at the Dr and said "play baball Bayden" (translated "I play baseball with Brayden").  The Dr and I were actually talking about how she likes to play with Brayden outside and even though it appeared that Lilly wasn't paying us any attention, she totally knew what we were talking about and was able to add her 2-cents worth!  The Dr was impressed!
Coloring - another favorite activity for both kids
Lilly has absolutely ZERO interest in doing any type of puzzle or sorting shapes into the correct hole.  I have no doubt that she can probably do it correctly, but she is beyond that I guess.  I asked that Dr about this as well today and she said that as long as Lilly is doing "pretend play" type stuff and putting items in/out of a bag, etc she was fine.  She never has had any interest.  She continues to warm up to books and generally will bring a few to you to read if you are sitting still for any length of time beyond 30 seconds.  At bedtime, we typically read 3 books.  Each night, she will pick the books and if I ask her "Do you want to read 'Pajama Time'?" for example she will adamantly shake her head No if she doesn't want it.  You never know what books she is going to pick, there doesn't seem to be any favorites that I can tell.

The Lilly Bug is still attached to the paci (or pafi as she lovingly refers to it) but we have been good the past month or so about really only having it at naptime and bedtime.  I do typically let her have it for about 5 minutes post wake up just to get past the wake up grumps but after that, we are done!  Unless they Dr tells us otherwise, I am not going to fight that battle quite yet :)  She is also very attached to "bankie" from Aunt Suz and Aunt Renee.  She will go to sleep without it, but is definitly a happier camper with it in hand.  "Beah"(or bear) that Brayden made her the week before she was born has also become a favorite sleeping companion as has Elmo.  *Interesting side note, but both my kids said "bear" early on with a distinct northern accent. *

As far as size, her are the stats from her 2yr well child check up this afternoon:

26.4lbs (48%)
32" tall (14%)

As a comparison, Brayden was 33.5" and 25.2lbs at his 2 yr check-up.  I am finding it difficult to find winter/fall clothes that will fit.  Her legs are really short, but her torso is long and very round :)  She needs a 12mo in the length, but a 2T/3T in the belly!  Quite a difference!  Dresses and skirts (if you can get them past the belly) that are supposed to be knee/calf length are ankle length.  The bonus is that some stuff fits much longer.  I am hoping that she will grow UP and not OUT anymore this winter and maybe some of her stuff will fit again next summer (just a bit shorter).
At the Drs office today - "No cheese Mommy!" (which means I am not going to smile for you!)
As far as foods go, it is hit or miss these days.  In general, she eats most stuff at daycare so I don't worry too much but at home, sometimes she won't touch her dinner and only wants banana or applesauce.  She continues to love all fruit (except for melons) and some veggies on occasion (asparagus, mushrooms, spinach, carrots, peas, potatoes, green beans, salad, and corn she will eat sometimes).  She also loves pizza, ice cream (who doesn't!), cheese, yogurt, chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese, milk, water, and pasta. She certainly doesn't starve that is for sure!

In the past few months, we have had to start doing time outs occasionally when redirection doesn't seems to work.  They seem to work for now and after her minute is up, we have a little "talk" about what she did wrong.  I hope that for now, redirection and time outs continue to work for us!

Update on the kids

I am going to try to start updating weekly on things that have been going on with our family.  My friend Stephanie does this and I love the idea of not posting big posts but just jotting down the little things that happen in life each week.  To catch up on the past few months, here are some updates on the kids.

Brayden
 - is now officially 4.5 years old (and he is quick to tell you that as well!)
 - is LOVING soccer
 - is also very much into football and baseball - we play both out in the drive way just about every night after dinner now that it is warmer
 - is a great big brother (most of the time)
 - I introduced him to video games a few weeks ago.  I was hoping that the old original Nintendo would work but I couldn't get it connected correctly.  He settled for the joy stick video games (Pac Man, Galiga, etc)
- Helped vacuum the playroom a few weeks ago....the vacuum is bigger than he is so it was quite difficult for him but he managed to do just about the whole room with little/no help from me :)

Lilly
 - is now 20 months old and acting more and more like a 2 year old
 - has gone pee pee in the potty now twice!
 - loves to have bows, etc put in her hair but will not leave them alone!  Here are pics from her very 1st pigtails!  How CUTE!!

 - has lots of words now including: please (which sounds more like a snake hissing), outside (s-side), dank you (thank you), sucse you (excuse you), more, help, up, sit, "no no no", "sit sit sit", "not nice", hat, shirt, shoes, socks, bow, off, on, out, mommy, daddy, mama (what she calls the paci), bankie (blankie), books, roo roo (the cat's name is Buckaroo), bird, wa wa (water), nana (banana), sberry (strawberry), woo woo (fire truck)
Sitting in the fire truck at Wesley's birthday party
 - is making some animal sounds although she gets a lot of them confused still: elephant, cow, dog, cat, sheep
 - loves to play outside
 - is mostly sleeping through the night now.  I say this and tonight she will get up 4 times!
 - can eat with a spoon/fork but still prefers her hands because, well, it is just more effective that way!
 - loves her teachers and friends at school but is always happy to see me in the afternoon :)
Bananas!!
Helping clean (gardening gloves and a paint brush)
 - LOVES bananas, graham crackers, strawberries, and blueberries along with most other fruit but she is getting pickier about other foods (at least at home)
Having a little snack during Brayden's soccer game
 - is still very much attached to the paci...she doesn't have it at school but at home she thinks that she needs it all the time.  I am trying to limit use to just bedtime/naptime but it isn't going too well.
